Record number of doctoral defences in 2011

The University of Turku arranged 149 doctoral defences in 2011 – the highest number in the history of the University.

The Faculty of Medicine led the count once again with 63 defences. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences held 39 defences, the Faculty of Humanities 12, the Faculty of Social Sciences 10 and Turku School of Economics 9. The Faculties of Education and Law both arranged eight doctoral defences.

- This is a great accomplishment. The doctoral training system of the University of Turku was reorganised in the beginning of August with the opening of the new Graduate School which brings together all the PhD students of the University. The aim of the Graduate School is to provide all PhD students with quality training, says Rector Keijo Virtanen.

December was the most popular month of the year with 25 doctoral defences.

The previous record in the number of defences is from 2010 when 141 PhD students defended their dissertations.
